In the United States, MD is the medical degree itself. In Germany the medical degree is the state examination, and no doctorate comes with it. The Dr. med. that most German physicians carry is a separate, optional research doctorate. Charite files it under its Standard Track: an individual doctorate, commonly begun alongside medical school, without a selection procedure. The PhD and the MD/PhD sit in Charite's Advanced Track. They are usually done inside a structured doctoral programme with its own admission and selection, and they require doctorate accompanying studies of 30 ECTS credit points on top of the research. Most people never see what a doctorate actually involves. They see the finished paper and the title, never the years of failed experiments, the returned draft, the week where nothing works. That gap stops capable students from ever starting, because they assume the difficulty means they are not suited to it, rather than that difficulty is the normal texture of the work. Felix publishes the middle of the process. The purpose is to make research legible to medical students, and to students in other fields, so that starting is a decision rather than a leap, and so that the people already doing it feel less alone in it. For anyone who wonders why Felix Pitzken as a researcher would be on social media at all, Nature made the case in a June 2026 editorial. People aged 18 to 24 now get their news through social media rather than news sites, and video platforms have displaced the established brands. The conclusion Nature draws is that researchers, the people with the knowledge and the training to communicate in line with research integrity, need to be on these platforms.
